Choose furniture that earns its floor area twice
In a small home every piece should do two jobs:
- A sofa bed turns the living room into a guest room.
- Ottomans with storage hold bedding and double as seating.
- A drop-leaf or extendable dining table seats two daily and six on Sunday.
- Nesting tables spread out for guests and tuck away after.
Go vertical
Floor space is scarce; wall space rarely is. Tall, narrow bookcases draw the eye upward and store more than wide low units. Floating shelves above desks and beds add storage with zero footprint.
Let light move through the room
Furniture with visible legs — rather than pieces that sit flat on the floor — lets light pass underneath and makes the room feel airier. Glass and light-toned woods do the same job; a wall mirror opposite the window effectively doubles the daylight.
Commit to a tight palette
Small rooms look biggest in two or three colours, repeated deliberately. A cream base, one wood tone and one accent colour (try deep green or mustard against neutral walls) reads as designed rather than accumulated.
Scale down, but don't shrink everything
Counter-intuitively, one properly sized statement piece — a real three-seater, a proper bed — makes a room feel more generous than lots of miniature furniture. Choose your hero piece, then keep everything else lean.
Rule of thumb: if you have not used something in the last month and it is not seasonal, it should not be living in a small apartment.
