Kenya's outdoor living season is effectively year-round — interrupted twice by rains that can wreck unprotected furniture in a single month. The good news: with the right materials and a simple routine, your veranda or garden set will shrug off both the long and short rains.
Start with rain-tolerant materials
- Synthetic rattan (PE wicker) over an aluminium frame is the gold standard — it does not rust, rot or fade quickly.
- Teak and treated hardwoods handle moisture naturally; they grey gracefully unless oiled.
- Powder-coated steel is fine if the coating is intact — touch up chips immediately, rust never sleeps.
- Untreated softwoods and bonded boards simply do not belong outside; they swell and delaminate after one season.
Before the rains arrive
In March and October, give the set fifteen minutes of attention:
- Wash everything with mild soapy water and let it dry fully.
- Oil hardwoods if you want to keep the warm tone (skip it if you like silver-grey).
- Check feet and joints — replace missing floor glides so legs do not stand in water.
- Bring cushions indoors or into a deck box; foam holds water for days and breeds mildew.
During the season
Use breathable covers, not plastic sheets — trapped condensation under plastic does as much damage as rain. Tilt chairs against the table so water runs off seats, and lift everything onto a covered veranda when storms are forecast.
After the rains
Uncover everything on the first dry week, wipe down, and let the sun finish the drying. Check wicker for loose strands and wood for raised grain — a light sand and re-oil now prevents bigger repairs later.
Mildew spots on cushions? Sun is the best treatment: scrub with vinegar solution, rinse, and dry in full sunlight for a day.
