It is the question our showroom team hears every single week: leather or fabric? Both are excellent choices when well made — they simply suit different homes and habits. Here is the honest comparison.
Durability
Quality leather is the marathon runner: it resists spills, takes a decade of daily use, and develops character instead of wearing out. Fabric durability varies enormously with the weave — tight woven polyester blends rated for heavy use last many years, while loose weaves pill and thin much sooner. Edge: leather, if the grade is genuine.
Comfort and climate
Fabric is breathable and feels consistent year-round. Leather is cool in the morning, warms with body heat, and can feel sticky in humid coastal heat. For Mombasa and Kilifi homes, fabric or perforated leather is the wiser pick. Edge: fabric.
Children and pets
Leather wipes clean after juice spills and does not trap pet hair — but a cat's claws will mark it permanently. Fabric hides claw marks better but absorbs stains and smells. Households with cats generally do better with tight-weave fabric; households with toddlers do better with leather.
Maintenance
- Leather: wipe weekly, condition twice a year, keep out of direct sun.
- Fabric: vacuum weekly, wash removable covers, treat stains immediately.
Price
Genuine leather costs meaningfully more upfront. Per year of service, however, the gap narrows — a leather sofa kept ten years often beats a fabric sofa replaced after five. Beware "bonded leather" priced between the two: it is leather dust glued to a backing and peels within a few years. We do not sell it, and we suggest you do not buy it anywhere.
The verdict
Choose leather for longevity, easy cleaning and a formal look. Choose fabric for warmth, colour choice, coastal climates and cat owners. Either way, the frame and cushioning matter more than the cover — ask what is inside before you ask what is outside.
