How to Choose the Perfect Sofa for Your Nairobi Living Room

KOI Design Team6 June 20262 min read

A sofa is the anchor of the living room — it is where guests are received, where family gathers in the evening, and usually the single biggest furniture investment a household makes. Choosing well the first time saves you money and regret. Here is how we advise our customers at the KOI showroom.

1. Start with the measurements, not the look

Before you fall in love with a design, measure your room. Leave at least 90 cm of walking space around the sofa, and make sure it can actually get through your door, corridor and staircase. In many Nairobi apartments the lift is the real constraint — a three-seater that cannot stand on its end may simply never reach the fifth floor.

How to Choose the Perfect Sofa for Your Nairobi Living Room
  • Two-seaters (140–170 cm) suit bedsitters and compact one-bedroom apartments.
  • Three-seaters (180–220 cm) are the sweet spot for most living rooms.
  • L-shaped / sectional sofas make sense when the room is at least 3.5 m on the longest wall.

2. Choose a frame that will outlive the fabric

The frame determines how long a sofa lasts. Kiln-dried hardwood — mahogany, mvule or solid blue gum — resists warping in our climate and holds joints tight for decades. Avoid frames stapled from soft white wood; they loosen within two or three years of daily use.

3. Pick upholstery for real life

Nairobi homes deal with dust, strong equatorial sun and, for many families, children and pets. Think about how the fabric will handle all three:

  • Leather wipes clean and ages beautifully, but keep it out of direct sunlight.
  • Woven polyester and linen blends hide dust well and are easy to vacuum.
  • Velvet is luxurious but shows marks — best for adult households.

Tip: ask for removable, zipped cushion covers. Being able to wash a cover after a spill doubles the practical life of a fabric sofa.

4. Test the comfort honestly

Sit the way you actually sit at home — lean back, put your feet up, slouch. A seat depth of 55–60 cm suits most adults, and high-density foam (at least 28 kg/m³) keeps its shape far longer than cheap cushioning that flattens within months.

5. Budget for quality, not just price

A well-made sofa costs more upfront but is the cheaper choice over ten years. If the budget is tight, choose a smaller well-built sofa over a bigger poorly built one — you can always add an armchair later.
