Dust weekly — the right way
Dust is mildly abrasive; dragged across a finished surface it leaves micro-scratches that dull the sheen. Use a barely damp microfibre cloth, wipe along the grain, then dry immediately with a second cloth. Avoid feather dusters — they just move the dust around.
Keep it out of the afternoon sun
Strong equatorial sunlight is the fastest way to bleach and crack a mahogany finish. Position desks and cabinets away from west-facing windows, or fit sheer curtains that diffuse the light. If a piece must sit in the sun, rotate it a few times a year so it fades evenly.
Polish sparingly
Once every two to three months is enough. Use a quality paste wax or a polish without silicone — silicone sprays build a smeary film that is difficult to remove and complicates future refinishing. Apply a thin coat, let it haze, then buff with a soft cloth.
Deal with water immediately
White rings from glasses and vases are the most common damage we see. Always use coasters, and if water does sit on the surface, dry it at once. A fresh white mark can often be lifted by gently warming it with a hairdryer on low — old marks need professional attention.
Mind the climate
Wood moves with humidity. In coastal towns like Mombasa, leave a small gap behind cabinets for air to circulate; in dry upcountry climates, avoid placing furniture directly beside heaters or fireplaces, which can open joints over time.
